Average running speed, by age and distance
The average running speed over a best-effort mile is about 6.7 mph (10.8 km/h) for men and 5.2 mph (8.3 km/h) for women aged 18-29: the median of everyone that age, not just people who run. Speed drops with distance and with age, and from about 40 the median man's mile includes some walking. The tables below cover ages 18 to 69.

All-out mile (1,609 m — four laps of a track plus 9 m) on a flat surface. Pacing is a skill: your second or third attempt is the honest one.
Every speed on this page is a distance divided by a time from the site's running norms, so be clear about where those times come from. Derived — converted from real data on a closely related measure. Derived from laboratory VO2max percentiles (FRIEND registry) converted to run time and calibrated to measured mile times of US Army recruits. Ages 30+ rest on the VO2max age gradient alone. The calculator above takes a mile time; your speed is 3,600 divided by your time in seconds, in mph.

How fast can the average person run?
It depends on how far. Over a mile the median man aged 18-29 averages 6.7 mph (10.8 km/h); stretch the run to 1.5 miles or a 5K and the same man averages 6.6 mph (10.5 km/h) and 6.3 mph (10.1 km/h). The longer distances use the same distance scaling as the site's 1.5-mile norm and the average 5K time by age page, so each column describes the same runner.
| Median | Mile | 1.5 miles | 5K |
|---|---|---|---|
| Men, 18-29 | 6.7 mph (10.8 km/h) | 6.6 mph (10.5 km/h) | 6.3 mph (10.1 km/h) |
| Men, 40-49 | 4.9 mph (7.9 km/h) | 4.8 mph (7.8 km/h) | 4.6 mph (7.4 km/h) |
| Women, 18-29 | 5.2 mph (8.3 km/h) | 5.0 mph (8.1 km/h) | 4.8 mph (7.7 km/h) |
| Women, 40-49 | 4.2 mph (6.7 km/h) | 4.1 mph (6.6 km/h) | 3.9 mph (6.3 km/h) |
A 12:00 mile is 5.0 mph, about where steady jogging ends and a mix of running and walking begins. The median woman drops below that line in her 30s and the median man in his 40s. About 48% of men and 14% of women aged 40-49 can hold 5.0 mph for a full mile; at 18-29 it is 80% and 54%.
What is a good running speed?
Measured against everyone your age and sex, the 75th percentile is a fair line for a good running speed and the 90th for a very good one. Over a mile those marks are 7.8 mph (12.5 km/h) and 8.6 mph (13.9 km/h) for a man aged 18-29, and 6.2 mph (10.0 km/h) and 7.1 mph (11.4 km/h) for a woman. The table converts common mile paces to speed and shows where each lands for adults aged 18-29.
| Mile pace | mph | km/h | Per km | Men 18-29 | Women 18-29 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Average sprint speed over 30 m
A short sprint is a different question from a mile. These are average speeds over 30 m from a standing start, so they include the acceleration; top speed later in a longer sprint is higher, and no population data on top speed exists for this site to draw on. Modeled — estimated from indirect evidence; treat every number here as an informed estimate, not a measurement. Estimated from active young-adult sprint studies. Population medians of 5.0 s for men and 6.0 s for women, a broader slow tail, and a 3% slowdown into the thirties are informed assumptions, not observed population statistics. Limited to ages 18–39; no body-size adjustment.

| 18-29 | 12.1 mph (19.5 km/h) | 13.4 mph (21.6 km/h) | 14.3 mph (23.0 km/h) | 15.1 mph (24.3 km/h) |
| 30-39 | 11.7 mph (18.9 km/h) | 13.0 mph (21.0 km/h) | 13.9 mph (22.3 km/h) | 14.6 mph (23.6 km/h) |
Women, 30 m sprint
| Age | 25th | 50th | 75th | 90th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18-29 | 9.9 mph (16.0 km/h) | 11.2 mph (18.0 km/h) | 12.1 mph (19.5 km/h) | 13.0 mph (21.0 km/h) |
| 30-39 | 9.7 mph (15.5 km/h) | 10.9 mph (17.5 km/h) | 11.7 mph (18.9 km/h) | 12.7 mph (20.4 km/h) |

Running speed of NCAA Division I athletes
Pooled across every D1 sport, weighted by head count, the median D1 man runs a mile at 9.5 mph (15.4 km/h) and the median D1 woman at 8.9 mph (14.3 km/h). Distance runners come from the 2024 D1 1500 m performance lists; other sports are converted from published VO₂max testing by sport. For a lap of the track, see what's a good 400m time.
Questions
What is the average running speed?
Over a best-effort mile, the median man aged 18-29 runs about 6.7 mph (10.8 km/h) and the median woman about 5.2 mph (8.3 km/h). Over a 5K the same two average about 6.3 mph (10.1 km/h) and 4.8 mph (7.7 km/h). These are medians of everyone that age, not of people who run.
How fast can the average person run?
It depends on the distance. A median man aged 18-29 averages about 6.7 mph (10.8 km/h) over a mile and about 13.4 mph (21.6 km/h) over a 30 m sprint from a standing start; a median woman that age averages 5.2 mph (8.3 km/h) and 11.2 mph (18.0 km/h). Top speed in a longer sprint is higher than the 30 m average, and this site has no population data for it.
What is the average running speed for a man?
The median mile speed for men is about 6.7 mph (10.8 km/h) at 18-29, 4.9 mph (7.9 km/h) at 40-49 and 4.1 mph (6.6 km/h) at 60-69. A man aged 18-29 who holds 8.6 mph (13.9 km/h) for a mile is at the 90th percentile.
What is the average running speed for a woman?
The median mile speed for women is about 5.2 mph (8.3 km/h) at 18-29, 4.2 mph (6.7 km/h) at 40-49 and 3.9 mph (6.3 km/h) at 60-69. A woman aged 18-29 who holds 7.1 mph (11.4 km/h) for a mile is at the 90th percentile.
What is a good running speed?
Against everyone your age and sex, the 75th percentile is a fair line for good. Over a mile that is about 7.8 mph (12.5 km/h) for a man aged 18-29 and 6.2 mph (10.0 km/h) for a woman, and about 6.2 mph (9.9 km/h) and 4.4 mph (7.1 km/h) at 40-49.
Is 5 mph a good running speed?
5 mph is a 12:00 mile. Held for a full mile it is the 20th percentile for a man aged 18-29 and the 46th percentile for a woman that age. About 48% of men and 14% of women aged 40-49 can hold it for a mile.
How fast do D1 athletes run?
Pooled across every NCAA Division I sport, the median D1 man covers a mile at about 9.5 mph (15.4 km/h) and the median D1 woman at about 8.9 mph (14.3 km/h).
How accurate are these speeds?
Each speed is a distance divided by a time from the site's norms, so it is exactly as good as the time. The mile, 1.5-mile and 5K speeds are derived for ages 18-29, from lab VO2 max percentiles calibrated to measured mile times, and modeled from 30, where they rest on the VO2 max age gradient alone. The 30 m sprint speeds are modeled and cover ages 18-39 only.
